Newer developments
Baby steps, baby steps. This week has been quite interesting. The Hunter game got another upgrade with several fixes and improvements, and I worked on a couple of tasks for my new Québécois friend and he has expressed interest in working with me in a follow up to his beautiful game (Hi Jonathan if you are reading this!). Linden labs (the Second Life people) sent me a coding assignment which I spent quite a number of hours on. That stuff was hard. They had better be building rockets in there! Anyway, it is finished and has been sent back. My fingers are crossed waiting for the next step. Meanwhile, I heard from 2KBoston (formerly Irrational Games and makers of BioShock) and a phone screening is scheduled for next tuesday. These are only small achievements, but they represent little steps in the right direction. I am trying to control my nerves and prepare my mind for interviews. The odds are stacked against me, but my will is strong. I keep getting flashbacks of that movie, "The Pursuit of Happyness" (If you think the title has a typo, you obviously have not seen the movie). Poor Will Smith had to spend a few weeks sleeping in a homeless shelter right before he finally landed his dream job and the credits rolled. Those thoughts are enough to make my teeth grind non-stop at night. Why I decided to watch that movie right after quitting my job to pursue my dream while putting my family at risk, I will never know. But if my story has a similar ending, I am going to be the most annoyingly happy man you will ever meet! For a little while, at least :)

  1. Hey, how about a "spoiler alert" warning next time!

And you as an "annoyingly happy man"? I hope you don't lose your edge in the process...

  5. Hello Engel,

My name is Mike, I'm currently in school for video game development - specifically. I'm in one of the worlds top 5 schools for video game development and I'm halfway to my bachelors. For the past 12 months I have been attending school for 40 hours a week 4 hour lectures, 4 hour labs, plus video game projects on the side. I'm very familiar with C++ and graphic APIs such as DirectX. I'm motivated by what you are doing, I've been awake since Monday at 3pm working 44 straight hours on a group project which consists of me as the project manager and three others. This is a 2 month project in which the first month is writing documentation for our game (turned out to be 150 pages or so) and writing tools such as particle editors, animation editors and tile editors. I'm sorry if I'm rambling, to be honest there's no point in this comment other than to congratulate you on following your heart as well as asking you for some simple words of encouragement. I'm certain you know how someone feels after coding for 3 weeks straight, 14 hours a day. I feel like I can't do this, I feel I need change... I'm certain you've felt this way at one time I'd like to ask what got you through it?
If I don't hear from you, I wish you the best of luck on your project and dreams.

    Sincerely,
    Mike
